Renaissance’s Palazzo Viti in Volterra

The Palazzo Viti is a beautiful private residence in via Dei Sarti, 41 Volterra.
The construction of the palazzo began at the end of the 16th century by a noble Volterran, Attilio Incontri, minister to the Grand duke of Tuscany. Benedetto Giuseppe Viti, an alabaster merchant and extensive traveller, purchased the palazzo in 1850.
The façade, attributed to Bartolomeo Ammannati , is forty three metres in length and sixteen metres wide.
The 12 rooms that are open to the public are beautiful fitted with furniture, porcelains, alabaster collections and other valuable items representing Italian, Europena and oriental art of 15th to 20th centuries.
Everything is still as is was when, through the centuries, the palace was visited by kings and princes, and by directors such as Luchino Visconti who came here to shoot the film “Vaghe Stelle dell’Orso” (Leone d’oro at the Venice film festival in 1964).
Visiting this beautiful frescoed rooms is like reliving the magic atmosphere of times past. The palace is still inhabited by descendant of the Viti familiy.
