Festival of the Boiled Egg on Easter Monday

Every year around Easter time and on usually on the country wide public holiday called “Pasquetta” in Pisa there is the Festival of the Boiled Egg. In 2013 it will be held on Easter Monday, 1 April. It will be the 47th time the event is held at┬áPanicagliora which is acutally around 30min drive from Pisa.

The festical commences in the morning with a mass at 10am. Straight after this breakfast will be offered to everyone present. Obviously this breakfast has a them of the boiled egg. All day there are festivities in the little village building up in the afternoon when there is a blessing and presentation in the main square. At around 3:30pm boiled and chocolate eggs are distributed as well as a traditional Italian donuts called, ciambelle. Once everyone is full they will be able to mingle through the little stalls that are set up for the day. Music and local delicacies are present in the town up until the end of the festival at around 7pm at night.

Some of the eggs will be cooked and made for eating with side dishes to accompany. So if you are wanting to have lunch this is the right place to go. Other eggs however will be decorated by everyone from the town’s elderly to local school children. You are even welcomed to bring your own painted eggs along to put on show for everyone to see.

Although it is a little far from Pisa, if you have had a big Easter lunch and you wish to walk off your Sunday roast then going up to the little hilly town of Panicagliora in the Province of Pistoia is a really nice way to spend Easter Monday. There will be people coming from nearby towns which creates a nice atmosphere. It will still feel intimate which makes it all that more special. After 47 years this event is not looking like stopping as it is one of the first dates on the calendar and start of many different festivals in the area all through summer.
